Our top tips on giving Britain a spring clean
The flowers have started to bloom, the weather is warming and there are more sunlight hours –Spring has finally arrived! With this season of new life comes a chance for a fresh start and a big Spring clean.
This clean up is exactly what the charity, Keep Britain Tidy, is promoting with its Great British Spring Clean (GBSC) campaign. From 25th March – 10th April, people are encouraged to take part in the #BigBagChallenge and contribute to the cause by picking up litter, educating themselves about recycling and changing their ‘rubbish’ ways for good.
This has inspired us to really think about how we can improve our approach to keeping our streets clean, and we think you can help too. We have put together five top tips on how to keep Britain tidy and how to help the GBSC campaign.
Litter Picks
The easiest way to help keep our streets clean is to pick up litter whenever you see it. Challenge yourself and your family to pick up one piece of rubbish on the way to school, the shops or the park. The key thing here is that small acts make a BIG difference.
Learn the Symbols
Sometimes it can be difficult to know what the different recycling symbols mean but there are simple posters online for you to make use of, such as this easy-to-follow guide on Recycle Now. How about printing off the symbols and sticking them on the fridge or near your bins?
Different Bins
Once you have learnt your symbols, make sure you have clearly marked your different bins to help separate out your rubbish. If an entire load of recycling has just one piece of rubbish which does not belong there, the whole shipment will be turned away, adding extra waste to landfill. If you are unsure what is recyclable, simply google it!
Get Rid of Junk
Nobody enjoys junk mail and it can get very tedious receiving multiple letters and leaflets through your door every day. Although we do not have a solution to stopping junk mail, we do suggest that you have a reusable bag by your front door to fill with the unwanted post coming through the letter box!
Make a pledge!
You can make a pledge to the GBSC to vow that as an individual, business, school or group you will pick up a certain amount of rubbish. There is a live counter of how many pledges have been made which is increasing all the time! Over 100,000 people have already committed to helping the campaign and you can help raise this number even more!
At Hill we are always thinking of ways to be more sustainable and environmentally friendly. At our site Knights Park, we have integrated rubbish bins with separate compartments for different types of waste, compost bins and underground waste shoots to make it as easy as possible for residents to recycle sensibly and correctly.
We can all do our bit to help Britain be a cleaner, greener and nicer place to live, so make a pledge or a change to your recycling ways now!
