The winning family will be announced in January and they will be regularly tweeting and blogging about their experiences as Cambridge’s most sustainable family.
The sustainable features in the house include:
- a heat recovery system which pumps warm air out and brings clean cool air into the building
- rain water harvesting
- triple glazing and
- fruit and vegetable planters in the garden, so the family can get on their way to becoming self-sufficient
The concept house has been constructed in advance of the launch of one of the UK’s largest zero carbon developments. The scheme, consisting of 208 homes, is called Virido, which means ‘to become green’ in Latin. It will be delivered in conjunction with Cambridge City Council in 2015 at Clay Farm.
