As students return back to education after the summer, be it school, college or university, we are delighted to be welcoming our largest ever intake of 24 trainees to our Hill team.

Over the past 13 years we have enrolled more than 100 trainees onto our Management programme, which offers young people the opportunity to kick-off their career in construction, all while earning a living and working towards a fully funded BSc (Hons) degree on dedicated study days.

The programme allows our trainees to gain invaluable on-the-job experience as architectural technicians, contract surveyors, site managers, technical coordinators and estimators, with guidance from our experienced construction professionals.

They work across the south east in areas including London, Cambridge, Oxford and Surrey, with one day spent at college where they learn the theory behind what they are doing on site. We have extremely high expectations of our management trainees, who have provided us with fantastic results so far.

Our trainee site manager, Jessica Mack, for example joined our programme in September 2013 and is currently three years into a five year programme.

I was due to start a law degree until I decided that I actually wanted to get a degree while working and gain experience. Hill’s management trainee programme gives you lots of responsibility, a good salary and perks like a company car once you’ve reached a certain level.

Overseeing the programme is Simon Hawkins, Hill’s Training Manager, who adds: “We are extremely proud of our trainees. It is fantastic to be able to see them grow from school leavers into construction professionals within our Hill family as they immerse themselves in our company. In the last two years half of our trainees have completed the programme with a 1st class degree, which demonstrates the power of complementing their studies with valuable and varied experience on site.

“I am looking forward to getting to know our most recent intake of trainees over the next five years and watching them develop their careers in the world of construction.”
